It can be hard to know if it is time to make your next career move, or if you should wait it out for some time.
In our last article, we discussed taking a leap of faith and moving on to the next phase of your career. In this article, we will discuss things to look for when it comes to deciding if it is time to take the next step in your career.
- Be Intentional About Your Career Goals
When you set out and start your professional career, be sure to write out what your goals are for your career. You may have a goal to have your own business one day. You may want to become a senior-level executive. You may want to be a mid-level manager. Whatever your career goal is, be sure that you have outlined it so that you can work towards it. When you’re aware of what you need to do to achieve your career goals, you will be intentional in making those steps.
2. Grow In Your Current Role
Regardless of whether you see yourself in a company for the long term or not, be sure to do your job diligently. You never know where you’ll end up crossing paths with your current colleagues or superiors; make sure that if you leave your company, they’ll have good things to say about your character and your work ethic. Take advantage of leadership opportunities when they are presented to you and excel in them. Whenever you’re given a chance to enhance your skills, be sure to take it so that you can show that you’re always prepared to learn. By the time you’re getting ready to move on to a new role, you will have so much under your belt to be successful in your new position.
3. Be Prepared For Your Next Challenge
Being prepared for your next challenge includes everything that has been outlined above. When you have outlined what you want your career progression to be like, you will know when it’s time to move on to the next season of your career. As you grow in your career and learn new skills, you can determine if they align with your new role that you want to take on. To be prepared for your next challenge, be sure that your skills, experience, and qualifications match up to where you want to go. Do your research on the company or job that you see yourself in, and be sure that it is something that you want to explore. Check the requirements for your next career move and work towards meeting those requirements, whether that means taking some courses or learning a new technical skill.
At the end of the day, be sure that you have equipped yourself for when the time comes to make the next step in your career. Have confidence in your acquired skills and in your experiences. Have faith that your plans will succeed!
